Education

Literate societies are critical if the Caribbean is to generate high quality human resource capital.  GHL has a structured approached to continued learning, training and professional certification among its employees.   In addition, GHL stages an annual ‘First Steps’ programme for children of employees (16-21), which offers them one week of office skills training.   It has also run one year Graduate Work Internships.

The Group also sponsors conferences, workshops or seminars that contribute to professional, national or regional development.   These are based on the merit and sustainability of the programme and its fit with our organisation.

An ongoing association with The University of the West Indies began in 1998 when Guardian Life of the Caribbean signed a Memorandum of Agreement to sponsor Premium Teaching Awards at the St. Augustine Campus.

The programme, which is administered through The University of the West Indies’ Instructional Development Unit, is considered unique by Universities abroad because of the successful collaboration between the corporate sector and academia.   Its success on the St. Augustine Campus generated such interest regionally that Guardian Holdings, parent company of Guardian Life Limited in Jamaica, extended the programme to University of the West Indies’, Mona Campus in 2003.

The award recognises the outstanding teaching accomplishments of Faculty.  It is awarded exclusively for teaching and all relevant aspects of teaching such as developing structures and processes that help create an environment in which teaching excellence is valued and fostered.  The Awards are now rotated with a Premium Teaching Lecture at the two university campuses, St. Augustine and Mona.
